START Serving!

The START Project Overview and Announcement
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and Microsoft’s US Partners in Learning have formed a public-private partnership called START (Service and Technology Resource Team). This partnership will support the use of technology to transform how people work together to meet critical needs in their schools and communities. United by the shared purposes of ensuring that students reach their full potential, pursuing innovation, and improving the quality of life for all, this significant collaboration joins the power of technology with the energy of young people to develop initiatives that strengthen teaching and learning across our nation.
At the START event on Monday January 25th, 2010 at the Microsoft office, Karen Cator, the new Director of Education Technology for the US Department of Education, interviewed students from across the country on best practices for schools seeking to strengthen the IT skills of students and teachers. The Six award winning schools; SWAT's East Garner MS (Garner, NC), SWAT's Forest Park HS (Woodbridge, VA), Tupelo Middle School (Tupelo, MS), Lower Eastside PS 515 (New York), Parkway West HS (Philadelphia), and Winston Churchill Middle School (California), were announced Washington on Monday.

START is an extension of the innovative work of national leaders in the field including organizations such as Students Working to Advance Technology (SWAT) , MOUSE, Urban Technology Project, C•R•E•A•T•E for Mississippi and GenerationYES. As part of the partnership, the group plans to highlight best practices nationwide for other schools to replicate and create a virtual student-led help desk where students will support teachers and nonprofit leaders using online, phone and onsite approaches. Please take a moment to enjoy the videos presented by the students and teachers of the START project.
